Payton earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Iowa and his Juris Doctorate from Drake University Law School with a certificate in public service. As part of the Children Rights Clinic at Drake, Payton successfully advocated in front of the Iowa Supreme Court in the case of K.C. v. Iowa District Court for Polk County, Case No. 23-0214, 6 N.W.3d 297 (Iowa 2024).
Payton is a member of the Iowa State Bar Association and the Polk County Bar Association.
