Mark J. Powell is a partner with the law firm of Miller, Zimmerman & Evans, P.L.C. in Des Moines, Iowa. Mark is a general practice attorney who represents individuals in divorce, child custody, modification, adoption and other family law matters. Mark is also the City Attorney for the communities of Madrid and Luther, and acts as general counsel for a municipal utility. Aside from practicing law, Mark is a certified Custody and Divorce Mediator and is certified in Collaborative Divorce. From January of 2010 to July of 2023, Mark was a partner with Finneseth, Dalen and Powell, P.L.C. in Perry and Jefferson, Iowa where he practiced in a broad practice range, including, but not limited to: divorce; custody; family law; municipal law; real estate; estate planning; civil litigation; contract drafting and negotiation; criminal defense; business formation; and corporate law. From 2006-2010, Mark was a Judicial Magistrate in and for Dallas County, Iowa. Before his appointment as a Magistrate, Mark was an associate attorney with the law firm of Cook, Brown & Scott, P.L.C. in Clive, Iowa. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Montana-Missoula, and a Bachelor of Arts from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois.
Mark is a member of the Iowa State Bar Association (member of the Family Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution Sections), Dallas County Bar Association (Past President), Polk County Bar Association, Greene County Bar Association, Jack D. Levin Family Law Inn of Court, Iowa Municipal Attorneys Association, and Central Iowa Academy of Collaborative Professionals. Mark is also a member of the Dallas County Conservation Board (past Chair), Wiese Foundation Board of Directors, and Perry Community School Foundation Board of Directors. Mark is also a past member of the Perry City Council in Perry, Iowa, Perry Chamber of Commerce (Past President), and Kiwanis Club of Perry (Past President). Prior to practicing law, Mr. Powell worked for the Iowa Democratic Party as a legislative campaign manager and policy analyst.
Outside of the office, Mark enjoys spending time with his wife, Kris, and their two daughters, Izzy and Freddie. Mark enjoys fly fishing, hunting, camping, watching sports, going to concerts and cooking.
